School by the lake: an autumn immersion in Windermere

In October 2024, a group of students from China travelled to the Lake District to join Windermere School. It was a school immersion with one of the most beautiful settings in England.

On arrival, the visiting students were welcomed into the school’s historic main building and introduced to the UK buddies they would spend the week with. The visitors wore their own school uniforms and their buddies wore theirs. Within a few days that distinction mattered far less than the friendships forming between them.

The visitors followed their buddies’ timetables through a full school week. They sat in on lessons, joined the conversation at lunch and took part in the school’s activity programme.

Being in the Lake District brought its own kind of learning. On the water, the group took to kayaks with local instructors, and discovered that working as a team is the quickest way to stay dry. On a clear afternoon they climbed to a viewpoint above Windermere, looking out over England’s largest natural lake to the fells beyond.

As on every Bridges programme, the group stayed together in managed accommodation, travelled on pre-arranged transport and had a local Bridges contact available around the clock.
